The Thursday Thought

On Tuesday afternoon at Good News Club, our after school program for kids, I got to teach the memory verse to the children.  It was Mark 10:16 "...Let the little ones come to me and do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."  These were the words of Jesus.  We had fun memorizing them.

After memory verse time was over Pastor Kurt came up and told the story for the day.  At one point in the story he related the type of Savior Jesus is.  Kurt said, "When children came around Him the adults tried to keep them away.  And do you know what Jesus said?"  At this point he pointed to posters that had our memory verse printed on them, and invoked the children to read it aloud together.

After reading the verse Kurt began to continue his story, but a student stopped him and asked, "Did Jesus say the reference, Mark 10:16?"  I thought that was good for a laugh.

Please don't misunderstand me.  I think Bible memory is important, and highly encourage the use of biblical references, but sometimes I'm concerned that we may lose sight that the scripture is not just text recorded for posterity.  It is inspired and many of the words in the gospels were actually spoken by Jesus.  He didn't have to quote chapter and verse.  He was the living Word of God.

Something to think about,

-- Pastor Ben
