Jesus, The Economist

Yesterday I had lunch with a new friend, Uche.  He is a retired banker who formerly worked for the World Bank.  He invited and took me to his favorite restaurant.  It was a wonderful greek restaurant in Rockville.  While we talked I heard him continually come back to his observation of Jesus as economist. Jesus told a parable about a farmer sowing seeds -- economics.  Jesus said, "The poor you will always have with you." -- economics.

Our time was spent talking about different places in the world we've lived or visited, and our harrowing brushes with death and embarrasment.  It was a delightful time.  Uche's parents passed away when he was very young leaving him orphaned.  This profound part of his story still affects decision-making in his life today.  He has dedicated his life now to supporting orphanages in Zambia.  He is embarking on a journey there for the next several months to take malaria medication to children there.

I look forward to his return.
