Are You Missing Your Mustard Seed?

A notable conversation between Jesus and his followers included a challegne to deeper faith.  Jesus often used parables to describe what His Kingdom would be like.  He said that if we had faith the size of a mustard seed we would be able to tell a mountain to move and it would; nothing would be impossible. (Matthew 17:20)

I was told a story this weekend of a grandmother who was going through her jewelry box with her granddaughter.  They came across a pendant that contained a mustard seed.  The grandmother explained what Jesus had said about the mustard seed and what it meant to have faith.  A few weeks after this conversation the grand daughter and her family were on a vacation in the mountains.  They pulled over to a scenic overlook and the family got out to enjoy the view of nature.  While looking at the mountains the little girls exclaimed, "Mommy, I would move that mountain, but I forgot my mustard seed!"  The grandmother told me that she found it amazing what children pick up.

It is amazing what children pick up, and faith is one of the most important gifts we can pass on.  I believe that every person must come to their own faith relationship with God through Jesus Christ.  We do not just get on the rolls of heaven because our parents were people of faith.  My children will not enjoy a close relationship with Jesus just because I do.  Their relationship with Christ will be in direct measure to their own faith.  But I can pass on to them the trait of faith.  Here are three ways we can:

  1. Show them a relationship to believe in.
  2. Show them a view of others that believes the best.
  3. Show them your personal interaction with God.
I'll unpack these in upcoming posts.
